MAHENGE AND LUHOMBERO, TANZANIA
ABOUT US
People with epilepsy in Mahenge have traditionally been feared and even shunned from their families and communities. With increasing education, the stigma surrounding epilepsy is improving. However, people with epilepsy are routinely expelled from school and face job discrimination. Imagine that medication cured your seizures but you were still unable to provide for your family because you were marked as "epileptic" in your community. This is what Open Mind Microfinance is working to change.
Provision Charitable Group, in collaboration with Kasita Seminary, now offers programs in carpentry and tailoring and a scholarship for high school students with epilepsy. For many of our vocational students, our program is the first time they have been able to support themselves or their families. We also offer microfinance grants for people with epilepsy to learn farming and beekeeping.
